Bone Grafting

Bone grafting sounds like a procedure that might hurt or cause you to miss a ton of work, right? While the name does sound quite scary, it is not as bad as you may think it is. In fact, it is a routine procedure that does not require a ton of invasive procedures, so you will be able to head home the same day. The procedure is performed on patients who are lacking bone in their lower jaw. There is a similar procedure known as a sinus lift, which is performed when there is a lack of bone in the upper jaw. Bone grafting will help patients who have lost bone due to gum disease or even trauma.

Bone grafting will be performed on your jaw before tooth replacement options are tried, such as dental implants. If you do not have enough bone in your lower jaw, you will not be able to receive implants. If you do, they may simply fall out over time and never truly anchor in place. The bone that is used to replace your bone is either manmade or from another source designed to mimic true bone. The point of the procedure is to jumpstart bone growth.

The bone grafting procedure has close to a 100% success rate and that is because the body is able to accept the new bone and will not reject it. If for some reason the procedure does not work, it can be redone until bone is generated.

Why Choose to Have a Bone Graft Performed?

When a patient wants to receive dental implants at Eten Dental, they will need to come into our Bayside office to receive consultation. Dr. Hwang will look over your teeth to help determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. If bone has been lost in your jaw, this procedure will help. Without the bone, you cannot receive dental implants.

There are a number of reasons why a patient would need to have this type of procedure done. The biggest reason is because the patient has lost bone in their jaw due to gum disease. Many adults suffer from gum disease and they do not even know it. This is why it is so important for you to receive a routine dental checkup.

When gum disease is not treated properly or within a reasonable amount of time, tooth loss and bone loss will occur. Your jaw may even become misshapen as well due to adjustments and facial shifts when the bone is gone. Once your jaw becomes misshapen, you may find it hard to talk or chew your food, thus leaving you in a predicament.

If you want to receive dental implants in Bayside, you will need to undergo a complete consultation to make sure there is enough bone in your jaw.

Benefits and Risks of the Procedure

The bone grafting procedure is a routine procedure that is considered to be quite painless. Patients who do fear the procedure should not be afraid to explore their options and consider it. The procedure is not as bad as it sounds. In fact, this procedure is very beneficial to patients and can help them smile boldly once again. Once the bone grafting has been completed, you will be able to look at tooth replacement options.

In addition to the benefits, there are always risks that come along with any procedure. While the risks are considered to be minimal at best, you still need to know about them to protect and prepare yourself.

The first risk associated with the procedure is that the bone will be rejected. We mentioned this a little bit above. It is not common and is unlikely to happen, but it could. You will need to have the procedure performed again and you may need to seek out an alternative treatment to replace your missing teeth.

It is also possible that your gums will begin to recede once the procedure is done. This can be corrected cosmetically, if needed at any point.

Another risk is that you may experience more sensitivity than you once did. The sensitivity can be managed efficiently with Dr. Hwang. Most patients are able to deal with the sensitivity, but others cannot, so let us know immediately if you experience a problem.

Lastly, you will need to worry about swelling, infection, and bleeding once the procedure has been performed. If you ever feel like the symptoms have worsened, it is time to call our Bayside office.

The Bone Graft Procedure

Here at Eten Dental, we perform bone graft procedures regularly and it is a routine procedure. You will need to come into our Bayside office to have it done. The goal of this procedure is to be able to help your body reproduce and promote bone growth. When the procedure starts, Dr. Hwang will separate the gums from the teeth and pull them done to expose the jaw bone. If your roots need to be cleaned, it will happen at this time.

Dr. Hwang will look for any holes that are present in the bone and then inject the bone material into the space. Your gums will then be stitched back together and you will be able to head home.

You will receive a booklet on aftercare instructions and we expect you to follow them. If you ever experience any problems with your mouth or teeth after the procedure, simply let us know. The healing process will take time and you should not expect to see results until about six months when you come in for a checkup.
